MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS’ HOUSE AND JEDBURGH CASTLE JAIL
Monday, April 3, 2017
Today, we’ve visited the house of Mary Stuart, also known as Mary, Queen of Scots. The house is located in the city of Jedburgh called Jethart in Scots.
When we entered the house, there were a lot of panels telling about the whole story of the house and the different people linked to Mary Stuart. There are three floors and a shop in the house. On every floor there are explanations about the story of Mary Stuart from cradle to grave:
She was born in 1542 and executed in 1587. We suppose that she lived in this house around 1566.
When she was a child, she lived in France because the religious situation in Scotland was dangerous for her. At 16 she got married to Francis II, the heir to the French crown. This marriage enabled Mary to become France’s queen consort from 1559 to 1561.
The famous French poet Ronsard was her mentor. After this French part, she went back to Scotland in 1561 at 19 years old. She was welcomed pretty well by the population but the protestants, led by the reformer John Knox, disliked her because she was Catholic.
There are also some paintings that represent Mary, her husbands and all the people who contributed to her story.
Finally, we did see the death mask of Mary Queen of Scots. Rumour has it that it was taken from her decapitated body.
During the visit, the house could not handle 49 students at the same time. So we were split into 2 groups: one group was visiting Mary Queen of Scots House while the other one was visiting Jedburgh Castle Jail and conversely.
In this jail there are many cells and inside there are panels which tell the story of the jail and how its prisoners were treated. We saw that people were sent to jail quite easily at the time. For example, we learnt that a woman was jailed for 14 years just because she was insane.
Finally, we ended the visit since it was time to have lunch.
